When Priorities Change
Every investor is at a different stage of their finanical journey. What someone wants from an advisor in their 30s may look very different from what they need in their 50s or as retirement approaches. That’s why finding the right advisor isn’t just about finding someone knowledgeable – it’s about finding someone whose philosophy aligns with your goals at that point in your life.
Recently, we were reminded of that in a way that meant a great deal to us.
Different Goals, Different Paths
Several years ago, we worked with a client whose investing style was much different than ours. While our approach was centered on long-term investing – creating a plan, setting goals, etc. – they were more interested in actively trading stocks and trying to capitalize on short-term market movements. They enjoyed following the market every day and were looking for opportunities to make quick gains.
There wasn’t anything inherently wrong with that approach. It simply wasn’t the type of investment relationship we were built to provide. After several honest conversations, we mutually agreed it was best to part ways. There were no hard feelings – just an understanding that our philosophies didn’t align at that point in time.
Life Changes… and So Do Investing Priorities
Life has a way of reshaping our priorities. Careers become more demanding, families grow, and retirement begins to feel like it’s right around the corner rather than decades away. Over time, many investors realize that chasing every market headline and playing the market isn’t always the right move. Instead, they begin looking for something more solid – a strategy built around long-term goals, organization and confidence. That’s exactly what happened with this client.
Nearly five years after we had mutually agreed to part ways, the phone rang. They explained their priorities had changed. What once was one person focused on actively trading had become a growing family. With a child at home – and the possibility of more children in the future – their priorities naturally shifted. There was less time to follow the market every day and a greater desire to build a strategy that could support their family’s future. Now, our conversations revolve around the goals that matter most: providing for their family, planning for the future, and making sure their investment strategy continues to support the life they’re building together.
Relationships Matter
One of the things we appreciated most about this experience wasn’t simply that the client came back. It was that we had left the relationship on good terms years earlier. We respected their goals at the time, even though they didn’t align with our investment philosophy. Likewise, they respected ours. When their priorities changed, they remembered those conversations and knew exactly where they wanted to start.
To us, that is what a good advisor-client relationship should look like. Not every relationship begins at the perfect time. Sometimes people simply aren’t looking for the same things. But treating people with honesty and respect leaves the door open for the future.
