Blooming sunflower in unlight symbolizing long-term investing strategy and growth over time.

A Sunflower Story

Spring is finally in full swing and the warm weather is likely here to stay. For some, this means beach days, bike rides, and lounging in the sun will become part of their normal routine. For others, the time has come to plant seeds and tend to their gardens. This year, Bethany decided to join in on the planting fun. Nothing big – just four sunflower seeds planted in a small garden. What could go wrong?

The First Signs of Growth

After about a week, two of the seeds sprouted and two seeds did not. That felt about right – she can understand that there’s always a chance something won’t grow. She was excited enough about the first two that she wasn’t bothered by it.

It was exciting watching those little green shoots push through the soil. Something to keep an eye on and watch for visible progress. But after just a couple of days, they were gone.

Squirrels.

Just like that, both seedlings were eaten, and Bethany was left with nothing.

When Your “Wins” Don’t Last

If you’ve ever invested money, that moment probably sounds familiar. You make a decision, see early success, and something starts to grow. And then, just as quickly, it’s gone. Sometimes it’s a market shift, other times it’s just a bad quarter. It can even be unexpected news that heavily influences the market. What looked promising suddenly isn’t.

So, what do most people do next? They hesitate, panic, and often pull out of the market thinking that’s the best move.

The Temptation to Stop Planting

After the squirrels wiped everything out, Bethany did what most people would do. She bought another packet of seeds with the plan to try again later. Maybe in May, when the conditions felt “better.”

That’s how a lot of people approach investing. It always comes down to the same thing, thinking they’ll jump back in if:

“..the market feels more stable.”

..things calm down.”

..I feel more confident.”

In other words: I’ll plant later

The Investing Lesson Hiding in Plain Sight

Sometime later, something unexpected happened. The other two seeds – the ones that hadn’t sprouted – finally did. They came through late, with no prior signs that it might happen. Now? They’re growing just fine. So far, there are no external factors that might hurt these new sprouts.

This is where the real investing lesson shows up. Not everything grows on your mental timeline. Some investments look great early on and fade just as quickly. Others seem like they’re doing nothing; until suddenly, they aren’t. That’s why a consistent long-term investing strategy matters so much. If you only rely on what’s working right now, you’ll miss what’s quietly growing beneath the surface.

What This Means for Your Portfolio

Investing isn’t about planting one perfect seed. It’s about planting consistently – and giving those investments time to grow. A thoughtful long-term investing strategy accounts for the reality that:

  • Some investments will perform quickly
  • Many will take time
  • A few won’t work at all

And that’s ok. Success doesn’t come from getting every decision right. It comes from staying invested long enough for the right ones to flourish. The hardest part of investing isn’t picking the “best” opportunity. It’s staying patient when nothing seems to be happening, continuing to invest even after feeling discouraged, and trusting that growth is still happening – even when you can’t see it yet.

That’s the discipline behind a strong long-term investment strategy.

Where This Fits In

At J Benjamin, we don’t try to predict which “seed” will sprout next. We focus on building a strategy that allows for growth over time through different market cycles, conditions, and outcomes. The goal isn’t to guess perfectly. It’s to position you so that when growth happens, you’re already planted.

In the end, some seeds sprout immediately, some take a bit longer, and some get eaten by squirrels. While there may not be any squirrels eating away at your portfolio, it all still works the same way. You can’t avoid every setback, but with us on your side you can continue to plant with professional guidance.
